Description

DescriptionScarce map of the state showing Carey & Hart decorative borders from the true first edition of Samuel Augustus Mitchell's 1846 New Universal Atlas. When he published the second printing of the atlas later that same year, he changed the original borders that had also been used on Henry Tanner's atlas maps, making this one Iowa map unique in the Mitchell production. The map depicts the region from central Iowa to Wisconsin and Illinois from Lake St. Croix to Missouri. The only area of the territory that has been surveyed to this point is the extreme southeastern portion. Just a small number of counties shown, identified and colored, owing to how early the territory is. The balance of the territory is divided up between the Fox, Iowa, Sious, Sauks and Pottawattamie peoples. A 40-mile-wide neutral zone is shown. This land was purchased from the Sioux and Sauk in an effort to establish territorial rights between the tribes. This treaty, agreed to in 1825, was carried out by William Clark of Lewis and Clark fame. The surveying was done by Captain Nathan Boone, son of Daniel Boone. A very historic and fascinating map.
