An Olmec Seated Female Mesoamerica, circa 1200-900 BC Solid buffware with cream slip, red pigment to the mouth area, black pigment on the pants or skirt, scattered black manganese deposits. She sits with her legs crossed, proper left hand on shin, right hand to the ground. She has finely modeled breasts and head with well defined facial features, like a portrait of an individual. Art historians suggest that the ancient Olmec artists who created these naturalistic figurines of men and women in relaxed poses came from Southern Mexico and worked at a site now called Las Bocas in the Valley of Mexico. The figurines were traded from there and have been found throughout the Olmec regions. In very good condition, minor repair to the proper right ear.
