VIRGIL and ARISTIDE MAILLOL, illustrator
Les Géorgiques de Virgile. Texte Latin et version Française de l'Abbé Jacques Delille, gravures sur bois d'Aristide Maillol. Paris: Philippe Gonin, 1937, 1943 (but completed 1950). The text copy 476 of an edition of 700, with two sets of suites of the wood-engravings in numbered wrappers, each individual plate numbered 4 from the edition of 100, posthumously stamp-signed for Maillol. Three volumes, loose sheets in the publisher's slipcases and chemises. 12 3/4 x 9 1/2 inches (32 x 24 cm); Volume I: (iv),174 (6) pp.; Volume II: (6), 154, (5) pp.; 122 original wood engravings by Maillol, printed posthumously, with two complete suites, one in black ink, one sanguine. Light soiling and wear, internally a fine set; together with LUCIEN. Dialogues des Courtisanes. [Paris, Henri Creuzevault et Dina Vierny, 1948]. Copy 95 of a total limited edition of 275 on hand-made paper. Loose sheets in publisher's vellum wrappers in slipcase and chemise. 15 x 11 1/4 inches (38 x 29 cm); 93, (5) pp., with 35 lithographs (7 full-page and monogrammed on the stone). The slipcase quite toned, the head of the chemise starting, toning to endpapers of the text, but the book essentially fine.
