Description
Near East, Islamic, post-Sasanian to Abbasid period, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A marvelous and quite massive pottery jar of rare form, intricately hand-painted in scrolling, floral, and geometric patterns and flanked by a pair of upsweeping handles with relief braided motifs. Enveloped in beige slip with black and orange decoration, the elegant vessel features a flared rim and thick, conical neck supported by a rounded shoulder and a narrow base. A band of pinched, piecrust design envelops the exterior of the broad rim, while a simple, linear pattern embellishes the interior. Size: 12.6" Diameter x 17.5" H (32 cm x 44.4 cm)
This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis by Oxford Authentication and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. An Oxford Authentication TL report will accompany the item upon purchase.

Chipping to rim and expected nicks and abrasions to surface as shown. Otherwise, intact and excellent with liberal remaining decoration and earthen deposits to surface. TL holes to foot and handle.
