Description
Near East / Central Asia, Turkey / Egypt, Ottoman Empire, Mamluk revival, ca. 19th century CE. A large and ornately cast brass lamp or incense burner, that was intended for a religious context, suspended from four long chains that attach to the rim - a lid (absent) would have capped this bell shaped vessel. The sides are pierced with openwork designs for ventilation and casting light. Scrolling floral arabesque and elegant thuluth script are cast across the surface- and interestingly there are human figures in profile and fish on the tiered finial tip. This was likely used in a mosque or minaret. Size: 14.75" L x 12" Diameter (37.5 cm x 30.5 cm)
