Dealer's Lot of Philatelic Interest Relating to Andrew Jackson, 5+ Pcs, Incl. Covers, Postage, Etc.

A dealer's lot of 5+ pieces of philatelic interest relating to 7th U.S. President Andrew Jackson (1767-1845). The archive consists of: two envelopes addressed to Jackson relatives Sarah Jackson and Andrew Jackson III; a transmittal wrapper addressed to Edward Livingston, U.S. Secretary of State during the Jackson administration; and two envelopes featuring cancelled Andrew Jackson "Black Jack" stamps. Four of the five items are accompanied by collector's display pages measuring 8.5" x 11." Printed and hand-stamped at upper left recto and lower right verso. Ex-Black Jacks Collateral (Col. Robert George McClellan, Northbrook, Illinois.) Condition is overall very good but please consult catalog photos for additional information relating to condition.

The lot includes:

1. An envelope addressed to "Mrs Sarah Jackson. / Hermitage. near Nashville. / Tennessee." Bearing a cancelled U.S. 3-cent green George Washington stamp and four philatelic markings including two Philadelphia hand-stamps. Affixed to a collector's display page with a typed description underneath. Expected wear including toning and minor weathering, else very good. Actual size of the envelope is 5.5" x 3.125."

Sarah Yorke Jackson (1805-1887) was married to the Jacksons' adopted son Andrew Jackson, Jr. (1808-1865). Sarah Jackson served as Acting First Lady for her father-in-law from 1834-1837. After her husband sold the family cotton plantation, The Hermitage, to the state of Tennessee in 1856, Sarah Jackson was allowed to live there until her death.

2. An envelope addressed to "Andrew Jackson, / c-o Governor Bates / Nashville, / Tennessee." An interesting envelope example featuring a cancelled stamp, postmark, signed docket note, and embossed black wax seal verso. Expected wear including uneven toning, else very good. Attached to the display.

Andrew Jackson III (1834-1906) was the "grandson" of President Andrew Jackson and the son of Andrew Jackson, Jr.

3. A transmittal wrapper addressed to "The / Honourable / Edward Livingston / Secretary of State / Washington" at center, between a red-stamped "Free" and March 26, [1832], New York hand-stamped postmark. Expected light flattened folds, and isolated loss verso, else near fine. Currently detached from the collector's display page but included.

Edward Livingston (1764-1836) served as 11th U.S. Secretary of State from May 1831-May 1833.

4.-5. Two manuscript envelopes, including a beardless Abraham Lincoln cover, each bearing a U.S. 2-cent Andrew Jackson "Black Jack" stamp. One of the covers is accompanied by the original letter contained inside dated June 7, [n.y.] Both stamps are cancelled. Expected wear including toning, isolated stains, and extensive annotations verso, else good. Both measure approximately 5.25" x 3." The stamped cover accompanied by the letter is currently detached from the collector's display page but included.

The Andrew Jackson "Black Jack" stamp was issued between 1863-1869. The "Black Jack" was used in the Union states during the Civil War. In retaliation for appropriating one of their greatest political heroes, the Confederacy issued their philatelic equivalent printed in red, the Jackson "Red Jack."
