Roman North African Redware El Djem Oil Lamp w/ Chi-Rho, C. 3th-5th Century AD - North Africa, possibly Tunisia. A redware terracotta pottery oil lamp depicting a decorated Chi-Rho symbol to central discus, with a geometric pattern to shoulders, consisting of rosettes and squares. Two filling holes, lug handle and a rounded canal nozzle, with circular ring to base. The Chi-Rho Christogram is a religious symbol used as decoration, and is a monogram for Christ’s name. 2 3/8" h x 5 1/2" l x 3 5/8" w. Condition: Signs of wear and use commensurate with significant age. Provenance: Private Boca Raton, FL Collection, acquired in Paris, France between 1965 and 1968 and brought to the United States in 1969. Authenticated in 1968 by Gerard Levy, 17 Rue de Beune, Paris and handwritten note in French accompanies this lamp.
