Description
A Greek bronze arm guard
Circa 6th-5th Century B.C.
26cm high
Footnotes:
Provenance:
Kuizenga collection, the Netherlands, formed from the 1970s onwards.
Very few Greek arm guards survive, suggesting that unlike greaves and even ankle-guards they were far less frequently made in antiquity. It seems likely that arm guards were not made in pairs and were used to protect the sword-arm of a hoplite, while the other arm would have been protected by his shield. The British Museum has only two Greek arm guards in its collection, one of them being recorded as found in Puglia, acc. no. 1856,1226.712 and 1865,0722.2.

Condition
There is a triangular tear to the bottom left corner of the guard that has been re-attached, (6cm x 7cm x 6cm), with two small losses to the edges in the same area (1cm x 0.4cm and 1.5cm x 0.4cm long). At the bottom narrower arm opening the perforations have a slightly shiny surface on the interior, probably applied to reinforce the edge. The same treatment has been applied to the perforations of the upper opening. There are also two small patches of resin restoration along the edge of the shoulder opening, (2.5cm x 1cm and 1cm x 0.5mm).
The shape of the musculature is visible through the green patina. The exterior of the arm guard has been cleaned and there is overall surface wear including chipping, and scratching with some encrustation.
