Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Peru or Chile, Inca Empire, ca. 1400 to 1500 CE. An adorable pottery stirrup vessel from the massive Inca empire. Spread over a thousand miles between northern Chile and Ecuador, connected by a massive network of trails, The Inca trail between Cuzco and Machu Picchu still in use today. Redware vessel shows a mother puppy on its side feeding three hungry pups. The mother shows a very exposed rib-cage indicating she too could use a bit of feeding. The face of this mother is very similar in style to Chancay pottery from about the same era showing trade (or often capture of skilled workers) was certainly going on between these two competing cultures. Spout in typical stirrup form present in this region since the Chavin ruled over 2000 years earlier. On side of spout is a small monkey with curled tail, indicative of pottery from the later eras. Sides decorated with negative resist cross-hatching. Size: 6.75" W x 9.5" H (17.1 cm x 24.1 cm)
