Samuel Chase ( 1741-1811) was a Founding Father, signer of the Declaration of Independence, and Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. He was appointed to the Supreme Court by President George Washington in 1796, but his position was thrown into jeopardy during the Jefferson administration. Following the 1800 election, President Thomas Jefferson and the Democratic-Republicans sought to weaken Federalist influence on the federal courts. Chase was accused of Federalist bias, and Jefferson desired to remove him from office. Chase was impeached by the House of Representatives on grounds of letting his political leanings affect his court decisions but was acquitted by the Senate on all counts. He remained in office and served on the Supreme Court until his death in 1811.
