Pre-Columbian, North-Central Coast Peru, Moche culture, ca. 400 CE. A lovely redware vessel in the form of an alpaca or llama head. Surmounted by a pair of petite, round ears, the adorable animal presents huge, almond-shaped eyes above a projecting snout, delineated nostrils, and a closed mouth. Llamas were the largest domesticated animal in the Americas prior to Spanish contact and played a vital role in ancient Peru, transporting heavy loads up steep mountain paths to access remote villages and creating a cohesive culture area linked by roads and trade. As camelids were the only burden bearing animals in South America, aside from humans, this vessel was likely created to demonstrate the importance of these animals to the Moche. Size: 5.4" L x 4" W x 4.2" H (13.7 cm x 10.2 cm x 10.7 cm)
Provenance: private Rochester, Michigan, USA collection, acquired 1987; ex-Louis Redstone collection, Detroit, Michigan, USA
