Item Details
Description
"Faberge in America" by Geza Von Habsburg with contributions by David Parks Curry, Christopher Forbes, Henry Hawley, John Webster Keefe and Ann Odom, published by Thames & Hudson & Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco on the occasion of the exhibition Faberge in America, which has been organized by the FAM of San Francisco and made possible by Faberge Company, 1996, First Edition. The small catalog (30-page brochure) of the Faberge collection in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, is inserted at the front cover.

Soft cover [some surface wear]; large format: 8.1/2" x 10.1/2"; the title page is slightly stained by the gilt from the opposite page, 366 pages including Index; fully illustrated in color, very good/ fine condition.

"Public fascination with Peter Carl Faberge, master jeweler to Czar Nicholas II, has grown steadily in recent years as a result of several important exhibitions of his art objects and an ever-expanding body of literature documenting his works. This latest contribution is the catalog of an exhibition that is to travel to several U.S. museums during the next year. Von Habsburg (former president of Christie's European auction house and author of Faberge: Imperial Jeweler, LJ 5/15/94) approaches the subject by examining American collections formed over the last century. The opening chapter briefly describes the House of Faberge. Subsequent chapters document individual collections, separating those formed before World War I (while the artist was still alive and his clientele included many wealthy Americans) from those assembled after the 1917 revolution. Superb illustrations of items as diverse as cigarette cases and icon covers?coupled with historical data and the provenance of each object shown?make this book a valuable addition to both art- and history-oriented libraries." [Margarete Gross]

"This book is a great Trifecta of an Informative Text coupled with Outstanding Photos and being very reasonably priced. I have a number of books on "The House of Faberge" and this one is one of the best I've ever read. AND while it spot-lights collecting in America one thing is clear - Faberge items have always had a special cachet for collectors all over the world with American collectors especially appreciating and acquiring them for more than a century. A wide range of superb masterpieces are shown including enameled cigarette cases, jewelry, clocks, figures of animals wrought in gold, semiprecious stones and enamel, delicate flowers wrought in gold, silver and enamel and several Imperial Easter eggs with the quality of their photos being excellent. A very nice overall effort and I give this book a strong 5 star rating - Highly Recommended." [a private review]
