Description
A very care carved wooden Mimika ancestor figure, Mimika (Kamoro) people , with a open work design, and shown holding a shield or spirit board. A Very rare and desirable work from an area that few ever field collected. Irian Jaya. The sculpture measures 20 inches ( 21.25 inches on its wooden display stand) Provenance: Ex. Koos Knoll, Netherlands since 1994.This sculpture was field collected when it was still a 'closed' region according to the Irian Government. The Mimika are a Lost culture/tribe that were forcibly relocated by the Government, causing great loss to human life and conflicts with the neighboring tribe the Asmat that were not friendly with the Mimika, their unique culture has been lost, this is an important and rare artifact.
