A very stout whales tooth carved with an elaborate landscape depicting ships in a harbor with a bustling city (Most likely San Francisco) full of hills and mountains. The tooth was carved on the John & Winthrop, a whaling ship captained by William T. Shorey who was born in Barbados and was the only black ship captain of the time. He commanded an all African American crew making the John & Winthrop the only all black manned whaling ship in the world.

From the collection of a Cranston, Rhode Island estate.
Approx. 3 1/2" t x 3" w x 2" d.
Condition
Natural striations, light surface wear associated with age and use, otherwise good condition.
