Item Details
Description
Stacy Tolman (1860-1935). Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. Village scene (? Cornwall) with Figures. Dimensions: 8" x 12". Work is in fair condition in need of repair & restoration. No reserve on this lot.Born in Concord, Mass, Tolman became a noted painter in Rhode Island at the end of the 20th century. He studied with Otto Grundman in Boston and then at the Academie Julian and Ecole des Beaux Arts with Boulanger and Lefebre. In 1890 he came to Providence to teach and head the painting department at the Rhode Island School of Design. Tolman was versatile in most mediums, painting in both oils and watercolors. There was an evolution in his work from somber brown tones to prismatic colors after he altered his palette and embraced an impressionistic style. His subject matter also evolved. In his early academic style with a limited color range, he concentrated on genre scenes of the country doctor making a house call or the maiden at home doing chores. With the influence of Impressionism, his subject matter gave way to colorful loosely rendered New England summer days and pastel winter scenes. His genre and landscapes remain actively collected and appreciated for their skillful rendering. He was an early and active member of the Providence Art Club, and Providence Watercolor Club. He moved into the studio previously used by Charles Walter Stetson, in the Fleur de Lys Building in Providence, painting alongside prominent Rhode Island artists Sidney Burleigh, George Whitaker, Chester Dodge, Frank Mathewson, and Gertrude Parmelee (Cady). Tolman traveled to Europe and the Middle East to paint, and exhibited at the National Academy of Design, and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. His work is represented in the collections of the Providence Art Club, the Rhode Island School of Design Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art (The Musicale, 1887), and the Metropolitan Museum in New York City (The Etcher, c.1887-1889).
