Description
Sydney Richmond Burleigh (1853-1931). "Church Along Riverfront", c.1928. Watercolor. SLR. Dimensions: 14" x 11". Framed & matted under glass: 28" x 22". Burleigh was a passionate painter and sought every opportunity to paint European scenes for his American audience. Burleigh studied in Paris in 1878 along with fellow RI painter W. F. Brown. He always kept little sketchbooks where he would draw a pastel or watercolor study that would later be turned into an exhibit quality work. Starting with his first exhibition at Doll and Richards Gallery in Boston in 1881, he had over fifty exhibitions in his lifetime. Burleigh was a beloved member of the Providence Art Club, and the first president of the Providence Watercolor Club. He had a long association with the Rhode Island School of Design serving on the board of directors (1887- 1893), as well as a renowned teacher. In addition, he submitted his work regularly to be shown at the Boston Art Club, the National Academy of Design, the Salmagundi, American Watercolor Club and the New York Watercolor Club.
