Friedrich vom Hofe was a famous reel maker who started his business in 1857. Edward, his son, became his apprentice in the 1860s. He formed his own business in 1867 and is credited with developing many innovations to improve the reel?s function. This right-hand-wind reel is marked ?EDW. VOM HOFE, N.Y., PAT. JAN.23.83?.The reel foot is marked ?S 631,? ?423,? and ?6-0?.
