Description
U.S. Constitution: Publius, Pacificus & the "New Constitution," 1802 Reprint
A hardcover copy of Volume II, "The Federalist, On The New Constitution. By Publius. Written in 1788. To Which is Added, Pacificus, On the Proclamation of Neutrality. Written in 1793. Likewise, The Federal Constitution, With All The Amendments. Revised and Corrected" (New York: Printed and Sold by George F. Hopkins, At Washington's Head, 1802). A former owner's name is inscribed in the upper right corner of the first section's title page as "F. Trapier (?) / Boston / 1803," and the same owner has occasionally made minor annotations near chapter headings. Expected wear including even toning, isolated foxing, and scattered water stains. Rebound in brown cloth boards with a gilt embossed spine. Else very good to near fine. A remarkably complete version of this volume beginning with the printer George F. Hopkins' list of current "Valuable Books." 351pp. 5.375" x 8.375" x 1.375."
The contents include Federalist Papers, No. XLVII - LXXXV, authored by "Publius" (the collective pseudonym of pro-U.S. Constitution advocates James Madison, John Jay, and Alexander Hamilton.) Topics discussed during this last batch of the Federalist Papers include checks and balances, a bill of rights, and judicial review. The 85 essays that we now refer to as the Federalist Papers were written by Hamilton, Madison, and Jay between October 1787 - April 1788, and published serially in American newspapers. Collectively, the essays advocated for the ratification of the U.S. Constitution. Also included in this volume are the Letters of Pacificus, No. I-VII ("Pacificus" was the pen name of Alexander Hamilton) defending President George Washington's 1793 Neutrality Proclamation; and articles and amendments of "The Federal Constitution, As Agreed Upon By the Convention, September 17, 1787."
