Reverdy Johnson served as a U.S. Senator from Maryland from 1863-1868. Just before his Senate term began, Johnson had unsuccessfully defended Union Major General Fitz John Porter on charges of disobedience and misconduct at the Battle of Bull Run. Another of Johnson's clients, Mary Surratt, was convicted of her role in the assassination conspiracy of Abraham Lincoln and executed in July 1865.
