Item Details
Description
This is an important Shino Mukozuke from the Momoyama Period (1568 to 1600). A mukozuke is a small plate used in the tea ceremony for sweets or light food items. In the 16th century, there were taste-makers such as Furuta Oribe and Honami Koetsu who promoted new concepts in aesthetic culture. Some speculate if these new concepts might have originated with Dutch and Portuguese gift exchanges. This plate is decorated with a relaxed scene of birds flying over a rice-field being harvested and dried. The style of painting is similar to the Zen ink paintings of the era. There are several areas on the face and obverse that show evidence of manufacture when they were stacked in the kiln. This was appreciated as a part of the “happenstance” of creation. There was not effort made to conceal this during the kinsugi (gold repair) process. There are 5 areas on the mouth of the plate that were repaired in gold. It measures 14.9cm wide and 6.2cm tall and is fitted in a custom Paulownia wood box. This plate was retailed for $8000 in New York in 1995 by Norio Azuma of Azuma Gallery. 2"h x 6"w x 6"d
