7th to 9th-century Tang dynasty Buddhist attendants were cast in bronze. This is a remarkably sophisticated and beautiful bronze sculpture from one of the high points of Chinese sculpture. It is an advanced example that shows sophisticated sculpting, casting, and finishing knowledge and ability to a very high level. It is extremely heavy, almost to the point where it may be solid cast. As can be seen from the photos, it has remains of original lacquer and gilding. It has a remarkable face that shows tremendous equanimity and joy. The flow of the robes simultaneously gives a seamless feeling of flow and motion.
