Description
Unusual effigy in the form of a fish with a human face, Aztec or Mixtec culture, Valley of Mexico or Oaxaca State, Mexico, CE 900-1500, buff earthenware, mold made and modeled elements. A hollow ware effigy showing a prominent anthropomorphic face with a fish-like body, with two large openings on each side. It is not clear what these holes are for since the effigy is not purposed for use as a sound-making instrument, and they are bigger than necessary to have served as vent holes. A truly remarkable object which surely had a specialized, ceremonial use. 3-1/4" H. x 4-1/2" L. Private PA. USA collection, acquired prior to 1970.
