Description
Fine 1850s Edgefield South Carolina Dave Drake (1800-1870?) One and a Half Gallon Storage Jar, slave made. This is a scarce jar due to size and also is marked with Dave's X and two punctates. The jar has a tooled & graduated shoulder typical of found works in this time period. The jar is truly a special gem, and one can get a true connection to the jar by Dave's handprints on the base left by the master potter's hands. This jar is a masterpiece of Southern stoneware with the strong African American spirit in which his wares are truly turned to last the test of time. Striking brown alkaline glaze with heavy runs, with classic Dave lug lifter handles that are unique to Dave. Top shelf collector grade example that is basically mint and would be hard to upgrade from, only one insignificant glaze flake. No chips, cracks or repairs. Fresh from a Georgia estate and is a truly special example. These examples are getting very scarce due to new collectors and museums making these pieces institutionalized and not coming into the market. Standing 10 1/4" Tall
