Description
Vintage Egyptian Nomad Wedding Basket Siwa Oasis. Siwa Oasis is a hidden gem in the Western Desert of Egypt, known for its rich cultural heritage and handcrafted treasures. Siwa is famous for its wedding baskets, locally known as "Maamourah" and "Margounah" This Siwa Wedding Basket is made from palm straw and features a conical cover. It is beautifully decorated with red leather, Mother of Pearl buttons, and silk threads. The basket itself is in excellent condition with no breakage to the weaved palm straw. A couple of the mother of pearl buttons are broke or missing as shown in photos. Siwa weddings are quite extravagant in the decoration, festivities, clothing and all other aspects of the occasion. This Siwa basket is quite old from the mid 1900's. The colorful materials used on the outside of the basket are most likely silk. This basket measures approximately 12" tall and 11" around. Very nice Egyptian, African hand crafted basket.
