Ancient Egyptian Pataikos Faience Pendant (ca. 1292-1070 BCE). Measures 1.2" H x 0.59" W. The bow-legged dwarf god meant as a phylactic (protective) deity and a mitigator of violent natural forces, who stands holding both arms to his distended abdomen. Phylactic amulets depicting protective deities like Pataikos, Horus-the-Child, and Bes were used by those who wore them to ward away evils that could cause illness, injury, or misfortune. Provenance: ex- Artemis Gallery; ex-private Toronto, Canada collection, left to family by descent. Acquired in Egypt in 1894-1896.
