Description

A pair of antique Japanese Satsuma pottery vases. Late Meiji era, before 1912. Bottle shape. Elaborate ornamental gilding. Shimazu family crest on top rim. Samurai portrait on the obverse. Fine detail work. Signed in Kanji on the bottom of both pieces, Kusunoki. Satsuma ware is a type of Japanese pottery which originated in Satsuma Province, since the 19th century it was mainly produced for Western export and therefore elaborately decorated. Shimazu clan was the main producer of Satsuma ware. Kusunoki Masashige, 1294 to 1336, was a Japanese samurai of the Kamakura period remembered as the ideal loyal samurai.
