A WHITE JADE CARVING OF A BOY WITH GEESE, CHINA, c. 1750-1850

Finely carved in openwork as a smiling boy kneeling between two geese and holding a lotus stem with seed pod in his right hand, his left hand caressing the larger goose's beak. His face with a serene expression and gentle smile. The translucent stone of a fine white tone with icy inclusions.

Provenance: From a private collection in the United Kingdom, by repute acquired at Christie's London in April 1999.
Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear.

Dimensions: Length 4.7 cm

Traditionally, geese are a symbol of loyalty, integrity, and love, and can also symbolize marital fidelity in Chinese culture. Young boys are generally considered a sign of good fortune, representing a blessing of having many sons to carry on the family name. The present jade thus symbolizes the wish for a happy and fulfilled marriage with many sons.
