PROVENANCE: "The Fred Harvey Collection" was handed down generationally until it wound up under the control of Byron Harvey III, great-grandson of Fred Harvey. Frederick Harvey, best known as the founder of the Fred Harvey Company ran a successful chain of gift shops, restaurants, and hotels known as Harvey Houses which started in the 1870s and were in operation until the 1960s, when the company was sold. The company amassed a large collection of Native American art and artifacts along the way. Byron Harvey III (1932-2005) was a noted collector and scholar of Native American art and culture. Byron was responsible for the donations of the Harvey Collection to museums, libraries, and cultural centers throughout the U.S., including a gift of over 2,000 objects to the Heard Museum in Phoenix, AZ, which was the majority of the collection of Native art owned by The Fred Harvey Company at that time. The items offered in this lot were de-accessioned from the Heard Museum and sold on behalf of Byron Harvey III during the 1980s. They were purchased at that time by our sellers, Dr. Robert and Peggy Dunn who were also life-long collectors (and related this history to us). Many of the original "Byron Harvey Collection" tags remain with the items. This is the first time the items have been offered for sale in about 40 years and it is a wonderful chance to own a piece of Western history!
