Description
an 1866 letter to Aroostock Civil War Association letter signed (stamped signature) of J.H. Barrett as Commissioner of Pensions on printed letterhead of the Department of the Interior, Pension Office, Washington D/C., to the postmaster in Bradford, Maine "Charges have been filed in this office, touching on the loyalty of Benj. Chadbourne, a soldier in the Aroostock War.... sufficient to cause the suspension of his pension", Barrett asks the postmaster to state what he knows "or may be able to ascertain relative to the sentiments entertained, and the course pursued" by Chadbourne" during the late rebellion.Intriguing document, worthy of research, not only for suggesting than an Aroostock War Patriot had been a confederate sympathizer, but for showing that even in the 19th century the government had a watchful eye upon the politically questionable.
