Bella cornice xilografica di Urs Graf e 17 iniziali istoriate. Segni di censura in tutto il libro, dati impressi al colophon cancellati: “BASILEAE APVD THOMAM VOLFIVM ANNO M.D.XXII. QVARTO IDVS NOVEMBRES”; Perdita di testo in seguito alla cancellatura alla carta 234. Aloni d’umidità al margine di alcune carte, ma nel complesso buon esemplare. Rarissima edizione con i segni della censura dell’unica opera del senatore Cazio Asconio Silio Italico (25 – 101 d.C.) noto durante i periodi più cupi della tirannide neroniana come delatore e quindi console nel 68. Curata dall’umanista tedesco Hermann von dem Busche (1468-1534), mediatore dell’Umanesimo italiano in ambiente tedesco, lo scritto restituisce in 17 libri i fatti della guerra di Roma contro Annibale, dalla spedizione in Spagna al trionfo di Scipione dopo Zama. Il tema, già trattato da Ennio e preannunciato in qualche modo dal “Bellum Punicum” di Nevio, viene questa volta ripresentato in stile virgiliano. Censorship marks throughout the book, date printed on the colophon deleted: 'BASILEAE APVD THOMAM VOLFIVM ANNO M.D.XXII. QVARTO IDVS NOVEMBRES'; Loss of text due to the erasure on leaf 234. Dampstain on the margin of some leaves, overall a good copy.
A very rare edition with signs of censorship of the only work by the senator Cacius Asconius Silio Italicus (25 - 101 AD) known during the darkest periods of Nero's tyranny as a delator and then consul in 68. Edited by the German humanist Hermann von dem Busche (1468-1534), a mediator of Italian Humanism in the German milieu, the work recounts in 17 books the events of Rome's war against Hannibal, from the expedition to Spain to Scipio's triumph after Zama. The theme, already treated by Ennius and heralded to some extent by Gnaeus Naevius' 'Bellum Punicum', is this time re-presented in Virgilian style.
