Description
VERSTEGAN, Richard. Theatrum crudelitatum hæreticorum. Anvers, Adrien Hubert, 1604 8vo. 200x162. Legatura mezza pergamena e cartonato muto. Pagine. 95. Frontespizio inciso. 29 illustrazioni a mezza pagina incise in rame. Testatine, Iniziali ornate, fregi xilografici. Qualche restuaro e difetti.Rarissima edizione latina magnificamente figurata. Condition
8vo. 200x162. Quarter vellum and cardboards. Pages. 95. Engraved title page. 29 half-page illustrations, engraved in copper. Headpieces, decorated initials, woodcut vignettes. Some restorations and defects.
Very rare beautifully illustrated Latin edition. The engravings, of excellent workmanship, have been attributed to Johannes Wierix. The author proposed to leave a precise testimony of the violence perpetrated by Protestants in England, France, Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands against Catholics. The work is therefore a theological-political denunciation of the persecutions that broke out in the aftermath of the Protestant reform. It consists of a figurative part closely combined with a textual, discursive and didactic part, which intends to describe and explain the illustrated scenes.
