Revolutionary War
[London, England], Late 18th century
Late 18th C. Rev. War Engraving, "? Paul Jones of the American Ship of War called the Bon Homme Richard?" from "Barnard's History"
Engraving
An engraving from "Barnard's New, Comprehensive and Complete History of England: From the Earliest Period of Authentic Information to the Middle of the Year MDCCCLXXXIII." Originally the book was "Printed for the Author and Published by Alex. Hogg, at No. 16, Pater-Noster Row" ca. 1781-1783, but this engraving could come from a later 1790s edition. Expected wear including minor edge darkening and scattered light stains in the margins. Isolated negligible insect damage mentioned only for accuracy. Else near fine. 9.25" x 15.25."
The engraving is entitled in full: "The Engagement of Captn. Pearson in His Majesty's Ship Serapis, with Paul Jones of the American Ship of War called the Bon Homme Richard: in which Action the former was taken while the Countess of Scarborough was also captured by the Pallas frigate." After artist William Hamilton (1751-1801) and by engraver R. Collier. On laid paper. Printed "Engraved for Barnard's New Complete & Authentic History of England" along the top. Printed "Drawn by Hamilton" at lower left, and "Engraved by R. Collier" at lower right, above the title/caption. With lovely decorative elements in the trompe l'oeil borders surrounding the image.
The engraving depicts one of the most celebrated naval engagements of the American Revolution: the Battle of Flamborough Head, fought off the East Yorkshire coast on September 23, 1779. Continental Navy commander John Paul Jones (1747-1792), aboard the "U.S.S. Bonhomme Richard," led a Franco-American squadron in combat against a small force led by Royal Navy Captain Richard Pearson (1731-1806) aboard the "H.M.S. Serapis." After a fierce battle, the "Serapis" surrendered, and the armed ship "Countess of Scarborough" was captured by Jones's forces. It was a Continental victory, but Captain Pearson was heralded as a hero because the large convoy of British ships that he was protecting still managed to escape.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
