Revolutionary War
[London, England], Late 18th century
Late 18th C. Rev. War Engraving, "? Right Hon. Captain Lord Robert Manners Mortally Wounded, on board the Resolution?" from "Barnard's History"
Engraving

An engraving from "Barnard's New, Comprehensive and Complete History of England: From the Earliest Period of Authentic Information to the Middle of the Year MDCCCLXXXIII." Originally the book was "Printed for the Author and Published by Alex. Hogg, at No. 16, Pater-Noster Row" ca. 1781-1783, but this engraving could come from a later 1790s edition. Expected wear including scattered spots and wrinkles, with a deckled lower left edge. Isolated negligible insect damage, mentioned only for accuracy. Else near fine. Trimmed to an overall size of 9.125" x 15.25."

The engraving is entitled in full: "The Gallant and Right Hon. Captain Lord Robert Manners Mortally Wounded, on board the Resolution, in the Glorious Victory obtained over the French Fleet, the 12th of April 1782, in the West Indies." After artist William Hamilton (1751-1801) and by engraver Robert Pollard (1755-1838). On laid paper. Printed "Hamilton delin." at lower left, and "Pollard sculp." at lower right, above the title/caption. With lovely decorative elements and figural vignettes in the trompe l'oeil borders surrounding the image.

The engraving depicts Royal Navy Captain Lord Robert Manners (1758-1782), flag-captain of the "H.M.S. Resolution," being tended by his men on the ship's deck during the Battle of the Saintes (also called the Battle of Dominica), a naval engagement waged in the southern Caribbean in mid-April 1782. British forces, led by Royal Navy Admiral George Rodney, defended their territorial interests against Franco-Spanish forces commanded by the Comte de Grasse. The British successfully thwarted Franco-Spanish efforts to invade Britain's sugar-rich colony, Jamaica, but at some cost. Captain Manners was severely wounded on April 12th, the last day of the battle, in one arm and both legs. Despite attempts to save his life through the amputation of one leg, Manners died of tetanus en route to England on April 23, 1782, and was buried at sea.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
