Two signed framed pieces by French poet Victor Hugo and English novelist William M. Thackeray, each nicely matted and framed. Includes the title page of Hugo's "Quatrevingt-Treize (Ninety-Three)" signed "Victor Hugo" and framed with a black and white photograph of Hugo. Together with an autograph letter signed "W M Thackeray", framed with two engravings. The signed title page has light, uneven toning throughout, with a crease at the bottom margin. Light foxing throughout and boldly signed. The letter has flattened mail folds with light mat burn and a few spots of soiling. With a bold, attractive signature.

2. William M. Thackeray ALS. 1p, measuring 3.75" x 5.5" (sight), Kensington, N.d. Signed "W M Thackeray" and addressed to Lady John Russell, wife of the Prime Minister. Reading in full: "I have an engagement contracted 3 weeks ago unfortunately, or I should have had the greatest pleasure in coming to Richmond on Friday." Matted and framed with an engraving of Thackeray and of Colonel Newcome (a character from Thackeray's "The Newcomers") to the overall size of 17.5" x 10.25".

Victor Hugo (1802-1885) indelibly influenced the nineteenth-century French literary, artistic, and political scene. In addition to publishing major novels such as the "Hunchback of Notre Dame" (1831) and "Les Miserables" (1834), Hugo also produced poetry and drawings. Hugo was tremendously popular during his lifetime and would have likely been frequently approached for his autograph.

William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) was a British novelist and illustrator, known for his satirical works, particularly his 1848 novel "Vanity Fair" and 1844 novel "The Luck of Barry Lyndon". During the Victorian era, Thackeray was ranked second in popularity to Charles Dickens. He died of a stroke at the age of 52, and an estimated 7,000 people attended his funeral at Kensington Gardens.
