Second half, 19th century; silvered face, with second dial and wind measuring gauge, beveled glass cover, marked "JOHN POOLE, Maker To The Admirality Fenchurch London. 4991," housed in zebra wood brass inlaid and brass mounted case, with engraved plaque to "John McRae Second Master of the Mississippi Marine Brigade... 1863," case, 9 in. H., 8 in. Sq.
Provenance: The Mississippi Marine Brigade were a Union amphibious unit from 1862-64. They operated against Confederate forces on the Mississippi river, and were prominent in the siege of Vicksburg.
