Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Casas Grandes, Ramos, ca. 1100 to 1200 CE. Extremely rare polychrome Casas Grandes pottery seed jar of the early Ramos or possibly Babicora painting style as the designs painted in red and black do not touch. Created in a rectangular form with rectangular opening at top - a shape I have not had the pleasure of seeing previously. Top extensively decorated in red and black zig zag panels with cross inside circles. End panels with wave and circle/cross designs while side panels similarly decorated with red and black. Size: 4" L x 3.25" W x 2.25" H (10.2 cm x 8.3 cm x 5.7 cm)

The Babicora tradition is an outgrowth of the late Viejo period painting styles. In contrast, the later Ramos style in which red paint is outlined in black appears to be an intrusive style, possibly derived from Mimbres Polychrome. Babicora was produced via the same techniques as Ramos Polychrome; however, Babicora is believed to be a precursor to Ramos Polychrome.

Provenance: Private Reinsmoen collection, Clear Lake, Iowa, acquired through descent from Robert Anderson, acquired prior to 2000
