Native American, Southwestern United States, New Mexico, (Dine) Navajo, ca. late 20th century CE. A lovely hand-woven sheep wool rug in the regional "Two Grey Hills" style which includes a border, matching corner elements and central diamond with a cross at the center, using only natural wool colors. In Dine weaving tradition the deity, Spider Woman, taught the ancestral people to weave using a fantastical loom and materials made from the earth, lightning, and sky. Cotton was their main material for hundreds of years before the Spaniards' introduction of sheep. The central cross is a symbol of Spider Woman and a mnemonic aid for weavers to remember her teachings and wisdom Size: 54.5" L x 36.5" W (138.4 cm x 92.7 cm)
