Defeat of Braddock

The defeat of Braddock also known as the Battle of the Monongahela, was a major turning point in the war. It was a decisive victory for the French and their Native American allies, and it led to the withdrawal of British forces from the Ohio Valley.

The battle took place on July 9, 1755, near the Monongahela River, in what is now southwestern Pennsylvania. British General Edward Braddock led an army of about 1,400 men to attack Fort Duquesne, a French fort located at the Forks of the Ohio River.

The French and their Native American allies were led by Captain Daniel-Hyacinthe-Marie Liénard de Beaujeu. They ambushed Braddock's army as it was marching through the forest, and they quickly overwhelmed the British forces. Braddock was mortally wounded in the battle, and two-thirds of his men were killed or wounded.

The defeat of Braddock was a major setback for the British. It showed that the French and their Native American allies were a formidable enemy, and it led to the withdrawal of British forces from the Ohio Valley. The battle also helped to galvanize American support for the war, and it is often seen as a turning point in the American Revolution.
