According to Albi, the present painting may be the oldest version known of a composition of the Holy Family, repeated numerous times in the workshop of both Vicente Macip and Joan de Joanes.
While some details in the execution suggest that the present painting is the product of the workshop, executed around 1520, the scholar Albi thinks that the master Vicente Macip intervened in the execution of the figure of the Virgin and Child.
The painting brings together three distinct iconographic motifs in one harmonious composition: The Holy Family, the Madonna Lactens and the Christ Child with the cross symbolising the passion. The latter was inspired by a Leonardesque model, while the Infant Saint John lower left derives from the works of Raphael, seen in Rome around 1515 and 1516.
