Description
Statuette napolitaine, Real Fabbrica Ferdinandea, représentant une femme portant une robe turque, circa 1780
Naples, Real Fabbrica Ferdinandea figure of a woman in Turkish dress, circa 1780
Modelled by Filippo Tagliolini, standing on a rockwork base, wearing a large white feathered turban with draped white shawl extending over her shoulders and green cape, her blue dress with lowered waistline buttoned down the middle, her right hand in her waist, her left hand holding her shawl and cape, 16cm high,
Footnotes:
Provenance
Italian Private Collection
Another figure of the same model is illustrated in Angela Caròla-Perrotti , Le Porcellane dei Borbone di Napoli, Capodimonte e Real Fabbrica Ferdinandea, 1748-1806, cat.no. 515. The model is part of a group of figures in exotic dress, likely based on print sources. The same author (1978, p.39) is suggesting that these figures may be related to an attempt by the factory to establish trade relations in Constantinople, although this did not result in any meaningful trade. The fashion for Turkish dress, or a European version of the like, caught on in Naples, as it did in may other European metropolitan cities and courts.
