Description
Only 1,001 of these innovative bolt action carbines were manufactured circa 1865 by E.G. Lamson of Windsor, Vermont. These are the first bolt action cartridge arms adopted by the US armed forces. This example is classically configured with a 20" barrel chambered in .50 RF with blade front sight and 2-leaf rear. Lock plate marked "U.S. / E.G. LAMSON & CO. / WINDSOR, VT." and dated "1865" at the tail. Crisp script "MM" Miles Moulton inspector marked 1-piece walnut carbine stock mounted with a single barrel band, saddle ring and bar, 2-piece trigger guard, and carbine butt plate. Left side of the stock displays a trench art carved cowboy and "BP" initials. The right has a carved rampant lion. CONDITION: Very good overall. Metal finishes have faded to a silvery brown patina with some mild cleaning and freckling. Stock has a pleasant age darkened appearance with scattered dings and nicks. Crisp, well defined bore. Fine mechanics. A nice example of a scarce Civil War carbine that marks an important developmental step in US military arms. Barrel Length: 20" Caliber/Bore: .50 RF FFL Status: Antique Length of Pull: 13 1/2" Manufacturer: E.G. Lamson Model: Palmer Carbine Serial Number: NSN
