Item Details

Description

Two French Revolutionary War Era Copperplate Engravings. The first depicting Commodore Esek Hopkins (Scituate, Rhode Island, 1718-Providence, Rhode Island,1802), after the painting by Johann Martin, and inscribed "Commodore Hopkins/ Commandeur en Chef oer. Ameri. Flotte," (6.75 x 4 inches, sight). Commodore Hopkins of Rhode Island was an American naval officer, merchant captain and Privateer of the French and Indian War. The only Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Navy during the American Revolutionary War, he was commissioned by the Continental Congress in December 1775; the second depicting Israel Putnam, Esq. (Salem Village, now Danvers, Massachusetts, 1718-Pomfret, Connecticut, 1790), inscribed "Israel Putnam, Esq.,/ General Major der Americaner," (6.625 x 4.125 inches, sight). Putnam was major general of the Connecticut forces, and commander in chief at the engagement on Bunkers-Hill near Boston, June 17, 1775. Frame: Hopkins: H: 11.125 in., W: 9.625 in., D: 1.375 in.
