A Japanese silk and metallic thread commemorative sailor's silk embroidery: U.S.S. Chattanooga, early 20th century, inscirbed 'In Memory of my Cruise. Hawaii. Phillippine. China. And. Japan', over thirteen stars, American eagle, shield enclosing photograph of three sailors and picture of the ship against six American flags, framed and glazed, 44"h x 29.25"h. Provenance: Ken Brown, Frank's Fisherman, San Francisco. Note: The Chatanooga was launched in 1903 as a Denver class cruiser with a crew of 339 sailors. As sailor silks were purchased by sailors as remembrances of their cruises to the Orient. Usually they fade quickly but his example is an exception with strong color and of exceptional size..
