Civil CDV of an unidentified 2nd Lieutenant of the 55th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. Photograph is backmarked " H. C. Foster Photographer, Morris Island, S.C." An image of this officer also appears in a 55th Massachusetts Volunteer CDV album (accessible on the internet) that is located in the photo archives of the Massachusetts Historical Society in Boston.That image also bears an H.C. Foster photographer's backmark. Additionally, a ballpoint pen notation at the top of the card on the reverse reads 55th Mass Vol." The 55th Mass. was the sister regiment of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteers. After African American recruits filled the ranks of the 54th Massachusetts the excess recruits formed the 55th Massachusetts. Free men of color from Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New York filled the ranks with Ohio providing the greatest number (222) of recruits. The 55th served primarily in South Carolina, suffering 32 killed and 88 wounded at the Battle of Honey Hill, South Carolina. This photo measures 4" X 2.5" and is in very good condition with no tears or creases. In-house shipping is available.
