Description

Rare map of Ohio and Michigan Territory two years before the first railroad will make its appearance. This map appeared only in the very late editions of Finley's Atlas, after Finley had sold much of his business to S. A. Mitchell and is therefore rare on the market. Only one copy has appeared in a dealer catalogue in the past 20 years. “Map of Ohio and the Settled Parts of Michigan” published 1833 by Anthony Finley in his New General Atlas. Only 18 Michigan counties are shown, four years before statehood. Although some detail is shown in Michigan, Salinac county is void of detail. Beautifully hand colored, the map highlights canals and proposed canals by hand colored red and blue outlining. Summit County in northeast Ohio is not shown—it will be created out of Medina, Portage, Wayne and Stark Counties in 1840. Includes Profile of the Ohio and Erie Canal at bottom of the image. Map engraved by J. H. Young. A rare map that is not found in most collections. The extreme upper right corner tip (about the size of a small pea) has been replaced. Short edge tear just above right centerfold repaired. Both of these repairs were done using kozo and wheat starch paste, a method that is reversible yet can last a thousand years.
