Authentic first edition/first printing of Samuel A. Mitchell Jr’s Map of Mexico, Central America and the West Indies, with plate number just above title, indicating the rare first state of this map. The publishing history of Mitchell Jr’s initial project (once he took over the business from his father) is quite informative. Apparently, he published the first edition for only a couple of months before altering the plates by removing the plate numbers from within the map frames and placing them outside the frames to basically make them page numbers. Because of the brief publishing duration and passage of 163 years, first printings of that first atlas are now quite rare, as are the maps contained therein. As with other maps from this first state, the printing is much more pronounced, with deeper shades and finer images. This double-page map depicts Mexico, Central America and the West Indies plus the southern portion of the United States from North Carolina and Florida in the east to New Mexico and the southern tip of California in the West. Since the map was created in 1860, Arizona does not yet have a presence in America, as seen right above Mexico. The West Indies, Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti and Dominican Republic, Mexico and Central America are shown in detail and there are four additional inset maps of Bermuda, the Panama Railroad, Cuba and Jamaica. The map is framed by the first state, deeply engraved floral border that makes this such a special piece of American cartography. Light mark at right margin.
