Description: 6 pages on both sides of 3 leaves of printed forms on blue paper filled out in ink, held together with a metal clip. 40.8x32.5 cm (16x12¾"). [with] Two death certificates from the Hospital de Caridad de San Felipe y Santiago, for Chinese immigrants (asiatico), one of them noted as being free ("libre"). Each one page, partially printed forms filled out in ink. Approx. 18x15 cm (7¼x6"), each with a few holes in them.Five hundred and fifty seven Chinese laborers bound for Havana, Cuba, aboard the French ship "Oripa(?)" are listed, with their boarding number, name, age and town or city of origin given. One of those listed, No. 508, has a small asterisk in front of his name, with a note at the end of the list stating that the Colono had disembarked, evidently having had second thoughts. The laborers listed are nearly all in their thirties or forties, the prime age for workers in the sugar fields to which they were undoubtedly destined. No. 508 seems to have made a wise choice. Signed and dated on the final page by by Ricardo Calderon, a Macau-based emigration agent, and by José de Aguilar, the Spanish consul at Macau.
Condition
The manifest is folded into quarters (i.e. once vertically and once horizontally), with short splits at the fold intersections, a little bleed-through of the ink, slight worming at one edge, but quite fresh and clean, perhaps the best condition of any of these manifests we have handled, very good to fine.
