Description: Partially printed document filled out in ink, signed by Jose Valle, secretary to the Governor General. Two pages on single sheet, 30.5x21.5 cm (12x8½").Uncommon contract for work in the copper mines ("Las Minas del Cobre") by an emancipated female slave of African origin ("Conga") named Esperanza. Reference is made to "la expedicion Guantanamo", referring to the expedition, named "Guantanamo," to the African coast, where this female slave was found. Working the mines was highly unusual, especially for a black female. The salary was four pesos a month. On the back of the contract is a printed statement of the "Obligaciones" of the employers of "negros emancipados," going into some detail.
Condition
Chipping along one edge, some blotting and bleed-through of the ink; about very good.
