Description: Partially printed document filled out in ink. 1 page, on recto of single sheet. With sealed paper stamp at top, municipal government inkstamp at bottom. 31.5x22 cm (12x8¾"). Jan. 23, 1871.Labor contract between Havana resident Domingo Fresueda y Garcia on the first part, and the emancipated slave "el moreno Higinio no. 4599 mayor de edad, naturel de Africa" on the other part. Higinio has received a government exemption to be able to agree on his own contract, i.e he was manumitted or exempted from slavery ("que mediante exencion que ha obtenido del gobierno queda en actitud de contratar libremente"). He is to be employed in "labores urbanos y rurales," and to receive a monthly salary of 10 pesos as well as adequate food. The document is signed at the bottom for "del emancipado liberto Higinio por no saber escribo," that is, he could not write. Though many were eventually freed, the lives of former slaves in Cuba were not radically changed.

Condition
