The sick do not receive very good attention here .I had to turn out yesterday morning, this morning and shall have to be out tomorrow morning before dy brake under arms in expectation of an attack. We have been brigaded and divisioned. Gen. Cowder is our Brig. Gen. Gen. Ambercrombie our Div. Gen...Mj. Dy is sick. I have to write this now as I shall have to go on guard tomorrow, and shall have no chance for a day or two. I am writing this on my chest. I have no overcoat yet. One company has left us on detachment service...From your aff. Son Hartwell; plus a single letter sheet from same to his mother dated Nov. 11 th 62 with two pages of inked text reading in part: I think it likely that I shall be broke of my rank yet, as there is a Board of Examination coming hear (sic) soon to examine and effect all ???petent officers. And although I know more now than I did when I left home, I do not feel myself competent for my position. We expect to move from here in a short time. I have a new tent. I have not received any pay yet. I shall be obliged to send this letter without paying...I hope we shall move towards Richmond. From your aff. Son Hartwell; and a single letter sheet from same to his mother dated Nov. 29 th 62 with four pages of inked text reading in part: The paymaster has commenced to pay our Division off so I shall be able to free my self from all my imbarrassments (sic)…I had my hair cut this afternoon by our negro barer. Capt. Harper had a large box come to him for thanksgiving ladened (sic) with contributions from all his friend in Sandwich...Lt. Manning had his second box from home in season for Thanksgiving. Sergt. Elder and all of the other Sgts. And many of the men had Thanksgiving Boxes. I had crackers and butter for my dinner. I hear firing. I think I have heard from Geo. Hathaway.
